rubygems - How can I contribute to an existing rails gem/engine -

what best way extent , contribute rails gem/engine

i have found blog gem/engine , want utilize in rails3 application.

but there few modifications / features have , i'm willing code them. , after add together them original gem/engine (if author permits)

but i'm confused how , code , test new changes.

so far have done followings

1 - fork gem/engine github account

2 - clone source local machine

3 - created sample rails app , added gem (from github account)

my question is,

how can code changes gem , test them. gem has used rspec , too, of changes i'm planning (like layout changes), litttle hard check rspec.
